You will need 5 things. I have linked some products via Amazon Affiliate Link to help if you are really stuck on what to use.
You will need:
1. A pair of hair clippers. These can be any hair clippers, even a beard or body hair trimmer will do the job. whatever you have lying around, just use that for the first time. Chances are you have been shaving your head with some kind of hair clipper anyway and are reading this article because you feel it's time to upgrade from the 0 buzz to the razor shave or in other words go BALD, bald. You will need the trimmer/hair clipper to take the bulk of your hair down as close as possible before using the razor.
2. You need some kind of towel for dabbing your head dry after shaving it and you can drape it over your shoulders too while shaving.
3. You need a razor. Don't over think this purchase. You can perfect your technique and shaving tools later down the road. For now just use any of the 5 bladed razors available in any supermarket. Gilette do many. I went to Lidl and grabbed the one they had.
4. You need some shaving lubrication. Shaving soap, shaving gel or shaving butter are all good options. Even hair conditioner works well if you have that lying around somewhere at home. Use anything but shaving foam. In my opinion shaving foam sucks and its really dry and "airy".
5. You'll want something to put on your head once you have shaved, rinsed and dried it. Think moisturiser. I of course will recommend you Baldcafe's Bald Head Butter which you can get HERE. In my opinion there is nothing better but at a push put some cocoa butter on there or some kind of all body moisturiser. Once again you can try to source your perfect products later. Let's get the first shave done first.
So you have everything you need for shaving your head bald with a razor for the first time. Lets go through it step by step.
For the best first time head shaving experience I recommend doing this in the bathroom, shirtless and in front of a bathroom mirror.
Step 1. Take your hair clippers (or similar) and using them on the shortest cutting mode they can achieve, shave off the bulk of the hair on your head. This doesn't need to be neat, tidy or pretty. Just get most of it off. Starting your razor head shave with as short a head hair as possible will allow for the most comfortable shaving experience.
Step 2. Run some warm to hot water in the sink and using your hands scoop up the warm water and run it all over your head for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This is going to soften up the hairs on you head a little making them easier to shave.
Step 3. Apply your shaving gel all over your head. Top tip here, the gel should not feel dry at all. If anything side with it being too wet. If at any point during the proceeding head shave the shaving gel or soap starts to feel dry just wet your hand with warm water and put it on your head to rehydrate the shaving gel.
Step 4. Now it is time to start shaving. I recommend you start at the hairline (or whats left of it) and just apply a gentle even pressure whilst simultaneously running the razor from the front of your head to the back.
Now run these same shaving strokes to each side of your head down to your ears. As you work your way from the middle to the side of your head just overlap the shaving stroke. Think mowing the lawn. You can clearly see where you have shaved due to the shaving cream.
Step 5. When you get to the ears you may need to do a few small up strokes to shave any straggling hair just above the side burns.
Step 6. Now it's time to shave the back of the head. Since this is your first time you can just continue the long shave stroke from the crown area down towards the neck line. If you want a slightly closer shave then you can shave across the back of your head overlapping these shave strokes as you move down towards the neck line.
Remember that you may need to rehydrate the shaving gel at the back of your head by adding a little warm water before you start shaving here.
Step 7. Use your phones front facing camera and your bathroom mirror to check for any significant missed spots.
Step 8. Now rinse off the remaining shaving gel in the sink in a similar way to step 2 but use some cool water. Or have a shower.
Step 9. Dab your head dry with a towel.
Step 10. Apply your Bald Cafe's Bald Head Butter or similar.
And you are done. How do you feel?
Its an interesting feeling shaving your head bald with a razor for the first time. The skin on the scalp feels different to normal skin. If you live somewhere where the sun is very powerful then for sure put on some SPF. I recommend factor 50 SPF for the face and head and will have other more detailed articles on that to come.
Enjoy your new clean look 👌
